About Me

Karma Henry is a California-born artist whose work honors both place and ancestry. Raised in the Golden State, her creative practice is deeply rooted in her Paiute heritage, with ancestral ties to the reservation near Independence, California, nestled beneath the Eastern Sierras. The land—its vastness, rhythm, and quiet strength—plays a central role in shaping her visual language.

Henry is widely recognized for her Geometric Landscapes, where bold forms and layered compositions echo the intricate patterns found in traditional Paiute basketry. These works serve as contemporary reflections of cultural knowledge passed down through generations, transforming ancestral design into modern expression.

An essential element of her practice is language. Each painting is titled in Nüümü (Paiute) and thoughtfully translated into English, reinforcing the importance of language as a living vessel of memory, identity, and storytelling. Through her work, Henry creates a visual and cultural bridge—inviting viewers to engage with heritage, landscape, and the enduring presence of Indigenous knowledge.
